On 10th February 2017 over 400 pupils and staff from Grove Primary School and the Warren school in Lowestoft took part in a special sign2sing assembly, all via video link.
In early afternoon, 11 delegates from Grove made their way to the Special School in Lowestoft where they were warmly welcomed by their respective buddies. They were first showed round the school before being invited to take part in a range of sign language games and activities.
Just after 1.30pm children and staff from both Grove and Warren made their way to their respective Sports Hall before a Skype link was established at 1.45pm. Modern technology enabled children and staff from both establishments to welcome and greet each other using sign language as well as teach each other songs that they had learnt as part of the sign2sing challenge. The event culminated in a grand finale during which children and staff from both schools simultaneously signed and sang this year’s sign2sing anthem “We are better off together”.
The event was facilitated by David Baker (Head of Grove) and Jan Bird (Head of Warren) and jointly organised by Catherine Godet (Grove) and Elizabeth Bloice (Warren). “This was an amazing opportunity for all students and staff from both schools to share a wonderful experience” said Elizabeth. “It was an emotional and memorable moment for all involved and it was great to be breaking new grounds as the sign2sing team were not aware of any schools having ever done this before” added Catherine.
A big thank you goes to all the staff and pupils in both schools for their enthusiasm. We are particularly grateful to Emma, Tom and Kelly for their support.
