Goodyers End learn a new skill with sign2sing

Children from Goodyers End Primary School in Bedworth are taking part in sign2sing on 4th February.

None of the teachers or pupils has ever signed before, so it’s a new experience for everyone.

Mrs Hayley Davies, Year 4 teacher said:

“None of the teachers or pupils has ever signed before so it’s a new experience for everyone.  Luckily sign2sing provide some fantastic online tutorials to help us learn.”

She added:

“sign2sing is a  fun way of learning a new way to communicate while raising funds for a really important cause. The children really enjoy getting involved, you can see their confidence grow as they learn the song and signs.”

sign2sing 2016 takes place from the 1-7 February.  Schools across the UK will be taking part, learning the new song Reach Out Your Hand and learning the accompanying signs.  They’ll also be taking part in fundraising activities to raise funds to help vulnerable deaf children and adults.

Schools that take part find children really enjoy the experience. The activity develops musicianship and speaking and listening skills while the song explores important issues such as kindness and accepting difference.

You don’t need to be an expert signer or a music teacher to take part as all the resources you need are available on the sign2sing website, including backing tracks and videos teaching the song and signs.

21904357513_2f42829a96_o (1)The new song for sign2sing 2016 has been launched with a fantastic video made by award-winning Deaf film maker Bim Ajadi. The new video stars  Deaf Pop Star Fletch with Deaf and hearing children from
schools in Hertfordshire.

 

The video for the song Reach Out Your Hand was filmed at Garden Fields School in St Albans. Children from the school took part in the video alongside their friends
from Heathlands, a school for Deaf children. The two schools regularly get together, sharing PE and music lessons.

Fletch has also filmed a series of tutorials to help participants learn the song and signs. And this year she’s had an assistant in the form of Hollie Williams, who won our competition to write the 2016 lyrics.
